The Hawaiian Archipelago

The Hawaiian Archipelago eBook Isabella L Bird

Wonderful travelogue written in the mid 1800's by a kick ass female traveler in Hawaii. She's not only courageous and adventurous, she captures the time period in ways that are surprising and delightful! She seems to have a botany background/interest. And she has an amazing, almost poetic way of describing her travels. This book gives quite a slice of life view of old time Hawaii, back in the day, before all the development. It also allows the reader a view into the early Christian times/viewpoints towards the locals. Although she at times has a condescending viewpoint of the cultural traditions, she, in the end, shows a great respect and advocates for Hawaiian sovereignty. Great glimpses into the monarchy of the time, and some of the figureheads of Hawaiian society and culture.

The Hawaiian Archipelago eBook Isabella L Bird Reviews

I love this author. Recommend for sure!
I also downloaded the free book and was dismayed to find it was not the complete edition. It was not stated this is only a excerpt. I certainly would have purchased the entire volume, and will do so when I finish my current book, also by Isabella Bird. She is a fascinating author and very insightful. I really recommend A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains.
A good book, but a bad scan. You'll have to guess at some of the words.
The letters Isabella Lucy Bird wrote about her trip to the Hawaiian Islands, especially the island of Hawaii, was so beautifully descriptive of her experiences I didn't want to put it down. Miss Bird has some health problems, not fully explained, that didn't seem to slow her down or prevent her from the many difficult adventures she embarked upon. The primitive means of travel, mainly horse and mule back, on virtually nonexistent paths across Hawaii's many gorges rain or shine. She ate anything the native Hawaiians ate and slept the way did. The descriptions of the island terrain and its flora were amazing. I loved the book so much I have given it as a gift.
Isabella Bird is her usual hardy, insightful, and indomitable self..Her observations are acute and she complements these with statistics and factual material.gleaned from various sources. The only area where she seems astray is in some of her given mountain heights.Idiosyncratic as she is ,many of her views are very much of her era. This is part of the attraction of the book especially for readers familiar with the Hawaiian Islands of today. Her final forlorn hope that The Islands "May still remain the inheritance of the Hawaiians".has not come to pass.Instead, annexation, alienation, and exploitation has been the pattern, something she clearly saw the seeds of.The epistolary nature of this book means that it lacks the considered nature of some of her,for me,better works such as"The Yangtze Valley and Beyond".A caution, dont do as I did,viz buy this and "Six Months in the Sandwich Islands".They are The same!
Fabulous read of you have any interest in Hawaiian Isles, Polynesian culture and their history. Particularly fun if you are traveling in Hawaii. We were able to find some of the same places and hike over some of the same 'Pali' trails that the author traveled in her Victorian age journeys. Many funny, 'Lol' passages and a thorough description of the flora she encountered made this book a delightful, informative and valuable companion on every adventure we took - if you like a bit of local history and good local stories while traveling to a place this is a great book to have when visiting Hawaii.
Firstly I must disclose, like the author, I've adopted Hawaii as a second home. It was very exciting to read of these first hand accounts of Isabella's experience of the islands almost 140 years ago. Much has changed but as is true of Hawaii much is the same. Wether you've experienced the islands first hand or not this book is gloriously descriptive & hauntingly beautiful like the islands themselves. The way Bird paints with language yet keeps a simple style is amazing.
