World-famous (and now retired) photographer Jenvieve Adams has a debt to repay—and a soft spot for witches who have lost their way. Or so she thinks, until they actually show up.
Join some of the cast of characters from the very successful A Modern Witch series as they take on a new kind of journey as guides for WitchLight. What happens when an obsessive psychologist and a wordsmithing delinquent get dropped into Witch Central?
Note Witches on Parole is a spin-off trilogy, set in the world of the A Modern Witch series. For those who are already fans of the main series, this book falls between book 2 and 3, but can easily be read anytime after book 1.

Witches on Parole WitchLight Trilogy Book 1 eBook Debora Geary Reviews
Instead of writing a review on each book, I'm writing one large(r) review that encompasses all seven books in this series.
Probably like you, chose some books that were "similar" to other books I had purchased. Debora Geary's series were just that; chosen "just for me" by . Can I just say, "THANK YOU!" to ? I have rarely enjoyed a series this much to the point where I finished book one (A Modern Witch) and promptly bought books 2 through 7 and the Witch Light Trilogy shortly after completing the first book.
It would be easy to tuck these books in the "fantasy" section of a library. That would be a mistake as they primarily deal with the relationships and the layers of personality; to the point where you can honestly believe these are real, living breathing people.
I have not found an author who has touched upon somewhat taboo subjects of mental illness (A Lost Witch), autism (A different Witch), and homosexuality (mainly A different Witch, but it is touched on in the other books in this series). She also deals with foster children (A Reckless Witch) and having to come to terms with and live in your own skin (A Hidden Witch). As a now "middle-aged" (eek) woman, I found Cassidy Farrell's quest for love (A Celtic Witch), hearth, and family very apropos (come on, who hasn't heard that it's easier to get struck by lightning than to be over 40 and get married).
Each of the above topics was dealt with in such a wonderful, touching way that they didn't jump out and bash you over the head. Instead, these were just aspects of the many facets of the character and you just accepted them and grew to love and care about them. I shed unabashed tears over several of the books and, in particular A Lost Witch.
Debora Geary's character development is very similar to Nora Roberts or Linda Howard. They are deeply developed characters and I'm sure you could ask Ms. Geary what Marcus' favorite color was and she could respond without a blink of the eye - so thorough are these characters written. They all come alive as you read about them and I was happy to read about two characters (Lizard and Elsie) that were just briefly introduced in the Modern Witch Series in their own trilogy; Witch Light Trilogy. I am sure I can happily confess to you that I cried over Lizard's triumph as she recited poetry to people who had accepted her for what she was; not the tattooed covered, angry imp she showed to the outside world.
Ms. Geary gives us characters to love, stories to immerse ourselves in, and gently reminds us to not judge a book by its cover (pun intended). I cannot wait until more Debora Geary books come out and plan on purchasing them strictly on the author's name alone - something I reserve strictly for my favorite authors; of which now Ms. Geary has been added. I give all these books a full five-out-of-five stars, read them, they won't disappoint!
This is definitely my favourite Geary "Witches" book.
I was sucked in from the beginning by the set up Two young witches must participate in a sort of Witches community service. One of them is a "tattooed fairy", a tough young woman with a bad attitude at risk of wasting her life. The other is a self righteous and rather rigid professional woman who cannot see beyond her own time-tables and rules. They are assigned some Witchy mentors who struggle to find ways to help them help themselves.
All characters are so sympathetically portrayed and with great humour too. I found the basic premise, of two people who are trapped in their own self imposed mental prisons, very compelling. Both women desperately need to change themselves, and they have the tools to do this.
But how do their mentors help them without taking away the power they need to help themselves? How do you help somebody you dislike? How do you see past the obnoxious behaviour to the struggling person inside?
How I wish I had access to such mentors! A benevolent, loving witch community to help me extract the thorns from my own heart.
The witches I have grown to love in her other books are in this book in force along with two new Witches, Elsie and Lizzard, who are the two witches of the title. They are both in need of guidance but not necessarily the guidance they were looking for.
Jenny, their guide, has her hands full with these two very different personalities so she calls in some help to supplement what she is doing. Sometimes things work and sometimes things don't. In the end everyone learns things about themselves, including the newbies.
I love Ms Geary' s witch books. They are well written with great characters who are well fleshed out. The plot lines always give you something to think about without being preachy. I don't mind that in a book. Something to think about other than the plot adds depth to the characters and the plot.
I wish the two other books of this trilogy were available. I would like to see how Elsie and Lizzard turn out. Maybe I can find the paperback somewhere since it isn't available on .
At first I worried it wasn't going to have my beloved "Modern Witch" series characters. Silly me! Can't get enough Debora Geary's books. Continuation of Modern Witch series...
